Radar weekly: The latest from the Scottish music scene

A day later than usual, here’s this week’s Scottish music dispatch. Have we missed anything? Get in touch via email or Twitter.

• Sons & Daughters announced last week that they are splitting up after 11 years together. The foot-stomping Glasgow band signed to Domino in the mid-Noughties on the back of debut release Love the Cup and followed that with The Repulsion Box in 2005. After a hiatus, last year’s Mirror Mirror was a step in a new direction but did not spur the revival the four-piece were hoping for.

In a message on Facebook, singer Adele Bethel wrote: “Hello friends, it is with heavy heart that I type Sons and Daughters are no more:( On behalf of all of us I want to to thank you from the bottom of my knee high boots for all the love and support you have shown us over the ten years we have been together, we had a blast!”

• Do you ever find your ears ringing on the way home from a gig and wonder if there’s a more peaceful way of enjoying live music? SHHHHH might be the event for you, “an all-day celebration of quiet music and art”. It’s at Platform in Glasgow on Saturday 1 December and includes performances from the likes of Emma Pollock, Meursault, Gravenhurst, Craig B of The Unwinding Hours and much more besides. • Django Django, who formed at art school in Edinburgh, missed out on a Mercury Music Prize last week when Alt-J picked up the prestigious award. But since when did losing the Mercury mean a career moratorium? (cf Pulp, Coldplay, Florence and the Machine...)

• All tickets for The Stone Roses’ June 2013 show at Glasgow Green sold out within an hour on Friday.

NEW MUSIC

• Jo Mango’s second album is out this week on Olive Grove Records. Murmuration was recorded and produced by Adem Ilhan, who performed with Jo in collaboration with such talents as Vetiver, Juana Molina, Vashti Bunyan and, at a 2007 New York show, David Byrne. It’s available on Bandcamp, and you can watch the video for ‘The Black Sun’ as a taster.

• Edinburgh’s Trapped Mice also have an album out this week. ‘Winter Sun’ is billed as drawing comparisons with Okkervil River, Morrissey and Bright Eyes, and is out on Armellodie Records. They play a launch show on Saturday at the Wee Red Bar (see below). The first single, Mona Lisa, is available as a free download.

• Singer-songwriter and electronic artist Plum will release Smile, the second single from her album The Seed, on November 19. The B-side is a collaboration with dubstep producer TeKlo, with the resulting ‘Rainbow’ featuring Plum’s vocals twisted around TeKlo’s barrage of bleeps and beats. Listen to both sides of the single on SoundCloud ahead of the release. There’s also a rather dark new video for ‘Smile’.

• Whatever Gets You Through The Night, an album of songs by 15 different Scottish bands, singer-songwriters and musicians, is out this week on Biphonic Records. Inspired by the hours between midnight and 4am, the project is part of a multimedia project that also included a theatre show earlier this year. Contributors include Errors, Withered Hand, Emma Pollock and Swimmer One, and it’s available on Bandcamp.

• Aberdeen singer-songwriter Cara Mitchell has a new track on her SoundCloud page. Taken from her recent EP, ‘Little Birdies’ is another example of her unique vocal talent and offbeat songwriting style.

• Miaoux Miaoux has produced a remix of the CHVRCHES track ‘The Mother We Share’. Have a listen on SoundCloud.

• Edinburgh trio Collar Up have a new single out this week. ‘Tonight’ is available as a free download through Permwhale Recordings. There is also an accompanying video for your viewing pleasure.

THIS WEEK’S GIG PICKS

Tuesday: Rozi Plain is touring her new album Joined Sometimes Unjoined, which is released on Fence Records, with a date the Electric Circus, Edinburgh.

Wednesday: New Zealand pop talent Ladyhawke brings her 80s-styled sound to Glasgow’s Oran Mor.

Wednesday: They used to be the sole preserve of indie anoraks but Animal Collective’s sunburst sounds have won them a (slightly) wider audience. The Baltimore band have a new album to play from at the O2 ABC in Glasgow.

Wednesday: Bill Wells and Aidan Moffat play songs from the superb Everything’s Getting Older LP and some new material at the Cottiers Theatre in Glasgow. Further Scottish dates later in November.

Wednesday: Glasgow singer-songwriter Jo Mango is at The Tunnels in Aberdeen, with Foxhunting, Will Leatherbarrow and Jamie Wren.

Thursday: Vic Galloway has his monthly new music showcase at the Electric Circus in Edinburgh, and this time it’s Norway’s Honningbarna who lead the bill. They are, according to Uncle Vic, “one of the finest acts I have seen in many, many years”.

Thursday: LA band Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti play Stereo in Glasgow, with new album Mature Themes in tow.

Friday: Edinburgh alt-folk outfit Meursault play tracks from their latest album Something For the Weakened at The Beat Generator, Dundee.

Friday: Night Noise Team play an acoustic fundraiser for mental health charity Penumbra at Loudon’s Cafe in Edinburgh.

Friday: Still in Dundee, local band The Mirror Trap headline a quality night at The Doghouse, with support from Vukovi, The Little Kicks and Broken Boy.

Saturday: Edinburgh band Trapped Mice launch their new album ‘Winter Sun’ with a show at Henry’s Cellar Bar in their hometown, with support from The Scottish Enlightenment and Simon Herron.

Saturday: Live/club night Limbo toast five years on the Edinburgh scene with a night at the Voodoo Rooms (where else?) with Delta Mainline, Zed Penguin and White Lightnin’.

Saturday: It’s testament to how popular he has become that Bon Iver is playing the SECC in Glasgow this weekend.
