Man dies after car skids into sea

NORTHERN Constabulary have confirmed a man died after his vehicle fell into the sea.

The incident occurred this morning on the A838 near near Achuvoldrach, Tongue (Point A above) in the Highlands when his car skidded off a causeway.

A rescue operation involving Aberdeen Coastguard was launched shortly after 10am this morning.

The driver was freed from his vehicle and taken to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness but was pronounced dead on arrival.

An Aberdeen Coastguard spokesman said today's icy weather conditions had been a factor in the accident.

"A man driving a car slid in icy conditions off the Tongue causeway. We co-ordinated the rescue effort this morning. He was taken to hospital but pronounced dead on arrival."

The A838 was closed following the incident to allow a police investigation to be carried out.

Northern Constabulary later named the driver as 46-year-old plumber David Bowes, from Skerray in Caithness.

The road has reopened and a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal, a spokeswoman for the force said.
