MP’s supporters quick to rush to his defence

Liberal Democrat Chris Huhne’s claims that Transport Secretary Philip Hammond recently broke the speed limit have been dismissed as “incorrect”.

In a BBC interview the Energy Secretary had appeared to make the claim about his Tory Cabinet colleague

However, Mr Hammond’s supporters were quick to leap to his defence and sources close to the MP said: “Chris Huhne should check his facts. Philip has always been open that he has had points in the past, but they have now expired.”

“To say he has been caught speeding recently is incorrect.”

Meanwhile, Mr Huhne is waiting to hear if he will be prosecuted following allegations that he claimed his estranged wife, Vicky Pryce, was behind the wheel when his car was recorded speeding.

Mr Huhne had said: “Apparently Philip has recently broken the speed limit and got some points so I mean I put my hands up. I lost my licence from speeding so I was in a very good position to say we shouldn’t do that.”
